FIREBORN: Dreamcatcher

FIREBORN – The German melodic metal band are the sort to exist in the sweet spot of experience and ambition. They’re a quintet with precise roots that carry the weight of their influences without reverence and the ability to bend melodic metal and classic hard rock. The band hails from the same management, song writing and production stable as Burning Witches and are set to deliver their latest album Dreamcatcher.

Led by frontwoman Jenny Gruber, who has been bestowed with the rare ability to rasp and soar in a way that would make the mother of metal, Doro Pesch, beam with pride, Dreamcatcher threads melodic riffs with aggression and atmosphere. Tracks like Point of No Return and Dancing With The Villain showcase a band that is comfortable in the tension between polish and grit, with added human pulse that makes Fireborn more than just another rock outfit.

Point of No Return is track three. It sets the tone for Dreamcatcher with a call to arms that is drenched in Gruber’s fiery vocal gymnastics and guitar distortion. Dancing With The Villain follows, a noir‑tinged hard rock anthem that balances menace with melody, each riff feeling like it could either lift you into the rafters or drop you into a pit. The title track Dreamcatcher slows the pace just enough to reveal the band’s subtler side. Think ethereal harmonies shimmering over propulsive rhythms, and Gruber’s voice turns from weapon to whisper, yet retaining her signature grit. Even the mid-tempo Little Wanderer, Crisis of Youth and Flashlight carry a sense of restless motion with a touch of guttural vocals. Across the album, Fireborn demonstrates a rare degree of confidence: the ability to craft hooks that stick, arrangements that impress, with vocals that go from raspy, to whispery, to guttural to a signature melodic soar.

By the time Dreamcatcher draws to a close, you’re left with the sense that Fireborn have done more than assemble a collection of songs — they’ve conjured an experience that puts you squarely in that late-afternoon sweet spot at Wacken, or any German metal festival. The air hums with anticipation, the night ready to ignite, and Dreamcatcher sets that high-octane tone perfectly. Dreamcatcher is the sort of album that brushes against the familiar contours of hard rock but never settles for comfort, but instead it demands attention and a little bit of surrender, all while carrying a degree of swagger that would make ‘80s female fronted rock and metal bands beam with absolute pride.
