If Mad Max had a warehouse rave in a burning forest, TERRANOVA would be the bloody soundtrack. Aussie-born bass baron, PhaseOne has ripped the roof off with his sophomore album – a genre-crushing slab of sonic chaos that somehow manages to be both a face-melter and a tree hugger’s wet dream. Out now via Sounds of Mayhem, this bastard of a record is equal parts brutal and beautiful.
Let’s start with SOS – the album’s battle cry and a filthy collab with Make Them Suffer. It smacked its way onto Triple J like a pissed-off magpie and hasn’t slowed down since, clocking over 600K streams. The track is pure sonic warfare. Breakdowns heavy enough to collapse your Nan’s patio, gut-punching bass, and slow extended vocals with a familiarity of Satan gargling glass. The audio equivalent of throwing a brick through a window – violent, cathartic, and exactly what the world needs.
Then there’s DIVIDE, featuring the genre-hopping talents of Intervals and Micah Martin. This one’s a proper emotional gut check, starting with dreamy, almost cinematic guitar work before diving headfirst into a spiralling abyss of melodic metal and future bass. Micah’s vocals carry a raw, aching honesty that cuts through the chaos, like finding a wilted flower in a warzone. It’s a track that says, “Yeah, we’re fucked, but there’s still something worth saving.”
While those two steal the spotlight, PULSE with Banks Arcade is another weapon in the arsenal, full of swagger, synth stabs, and neck-snapping riffs. It’s less ‘punch you in the face‘ and more ‘kick you in the shins then sprint off snickering’ offering a bit more bounce and groove without losing the aggression. Think rave pit meets nu-metal tantrum.
What really makes TERRANOVA hit different is the intent behind it. PhaseOne’s not just building bangers – he’s crafting a message. The title, meaning ‘new earth‘, points to rebirth and sustainability, themes that run through the record like a vein of green through a scorched wasteland. It’s no coincidence this bloke – who has seen wildfires torch both Aussie bush and Californian hills – is releasing this on eco-friendly BioVinyl and planting trees to mark the drop. That’s not just good PR, that’s walking the fkn walk.
