Down And Out, a genre-blending band from Tarndanya/Adelaide, formed in late 2019, has quickly made a name for themselves as a dynamic force in the Australian music scene. Mixing elements of pop/punk, rock, EDM, pop, and dance music, their sound is constantly evolving. With each release, they push boundaries and experiment with new ideas, refusing to repeat themselves. Having dropped two EPs already, the band is gearing up to release their third in early 2025 (out now), further cementing their commitment to creativity. Collaborations with prominent Australian figures like ARIA-nominated producer Stevie Knight, and directors Colin Jeffs and Kim Quint, have also led to visually stunning music videos and visuals that complement their music.
Throughout their career, Down And Out has worked with a number of well-known artists, including Kellin Quinn (Sleeping With Sirens), Emmy Mack (RedHook), and David Potter (Stand Atlantic). They’ve also delivered standout live performances alongside acts such as RedHook and The Dead Love. Their 2023 EP Smoke and Mirrors was a massive success, with sold-out shows in Melbourne and Sydney, as well as extensive airplay on Triple J and other Australian stations. The band’s impressive 60k monthly Spotify listeners position them for continued growth locally and internationally.
Their upcoming EP Sunk Cost Fallacy channels the spirit of early 2000s pop-punk, a genre that was once dominated by only a few Australian bands. For many, this sound evokes a sense of nostalgia, and Down And Out captures it perfectly, making this release a welcome throwback for fans.
The EP opens with Heaven Hell, a punchy and fast-paced track that feels like a blend of The Story So Far, Sleeping With Sirens, and A Day to Remember. The tight vocals, guitars, and drumming hit hard without one element overpowering the others, making it an impressive introduction that sets the tone for the rest of the EP.
LEECH! starts with an electronic intro before exploding into a heavy mix of guitar, drums, and subtle synths. The fusion of electronic elements with classic pop-punk creates a fresh and exciting dynamic that gives this track a distinct edge.
The title track, Sunk Cost Fallacy, brings a vocal-driven feel, with the band’s signature blend of catchy, simple drumming and crunchy guitar. Luke Ganeo’s vocals, reminiscent of Tom DeLonge’s signature nasal tone, give the song a nostalgic vibe while demonstrating the band’s ability to experiment and refine their sound.
Tombstone begins with emotionally charged lyrics and the gentle strumming of an acoustic guitar, building into a slower song that still packs a punch in the chorus. This track really highlights Luke’s range and ability to sustain emotional intensity, with clever and poignant lyrics that resonate throughout.
Y U Gotta Do Me Like That brings a more pop-oriented sound while still blending in electronic elements with clean rock instrumentation. The track is upbeat and catchy, with a surprise feature from As December Falls that adds an exciting layer to the song.
