Five-piece metal outfit God Hunter have unleashed Psychonaut from their album Season Of The End. It is the album’s third single, and the way I see things if an album is good enough to have three or more songs on it deemed worthy of release, then it at least deserves a listen…
Opening with a comforting guitar riff, things soon heat up courtesy of a fast-paced drum roll that summons forth doom-inspired growls that allow the music to fall into line to supplement them.
This track has a driving underbelly that simmers menacingly in the song’s underbelly, allowing for a measured and deliberate opening section that has a Black Label Society type feel to it without the impending threat of a ten-minute guitar solo.
Just after the two-minute mark, things shift up a notch as the guitars gather some urgency without going to extremes. It’s just enough to signify a slight shift in momentum that is perpetuated at the three-minute mark as a guitar solo of sorts acts as a precursor to more urgency in the vocals that is both comforting and menacing. Strange but true…
The changing guitar tempos act as subtle breakdowns at timely junctures, removing the necessity to completely change the angle of the song to accommodate breakdowns of the heavier variety.
You get the sense God Hunter class heaviness more as a sludge-fueled slab of sonic density rather than complexity of playing, which suits their style of music well.
