Back on 9th of February, Scottish technical Death band Man Must Die started a campaign through pledgemusic.com to raise funds for their next album.
The fan assisted site which began in 2009, allows artists to pledge for funds to raise much needed money for recording of albums.
This is nothing new, Flotsam and Jetsam used the same site last year for their Ugly Noise album as did Earthtone9 in 2011. Sam Dunn used a similar site, INDIEGOGO, to raise funds for the ‘Lost Episode’ for his documentary Metal Evolution.
Now with 10 days to go for Man Must Die’s campaign to end, the band have only reached 37% of their intended target.
Fans certainly don’t walk away with just the heartening feeling knowing they helped their favourite artists albums become fruition. Depending on the amount you donate will get you something in return. For £150 you can have vocalist Joe McGlynn perform a guest vocal on your own bands demo, £200 gets you to pick what song you want them to cover (who has never wished that of your favourite band?) and for a whopping £750, the band will come and play at your house. Many more reasonably priced offers are also available here.
McGlynn’s reasoning behind this approach of album making is a direct outcome of the suffering pirate downloading is causing the music industry and record labels just not willing to fork out the kind of money they use to.
