“‘August” was inspired by a part of my life a few years ago”, explained James, vocalist for Brisbane’s Hollow Doubt, “when I was engaged to someone who I idolised and as I watched, we slowly drifted apart and it came to a close. It broke me completely and I hit rock bottom. It started out as a breakup song but slowly evolved into exploring a mindset I once had and now that I can look back with neutrality it’s a reminder that you don’t have to stay somewhere you’re not happy. I was inspired by early to mid-2000’s emo and Post-hardcore bands (Silverstein, Senses Fail etc) so that shines a lot through my writing process for lyrics. Instrumentally the inspiration is through a mixture of Hardcore\Metalcore as those are the genres we grew up on”.
The video clip for “August” is about the songwriting process itself. It provides a visual representation of the full extent of emotions\memories etc experienced by the writer when he wrote the lyrics.
The style of the song is basically hardcore, but there is a big focus on melodic lead guitar parts. The song is quite emotional & I think the instruments\vocals reflect that. August was the first song that set the direction for the band. Each member came from different styles and genres and it gave us a clear path for the upcoming EP. It took a few songs in to get the feel of solid middle ground but we’re happy with how quickly we worked through the initial struggles of starting a band and feel we’re improving with each song.
August will be on our debut EP Threads which will hopefully come out later this year.
