When you think of Italian hard rock/metal bands, veterans Lacuna Coil likely come to mind. Giving them a run for their money are The Kreoles . Led by front-woman Valentina Merlo, the four-piece return with album number two Psycho.
Kicking off with The Last Man, country guitar gives way to heavy riffs from guitarist Ivan McSimon before you can even consider boot-scooting. Valentina’s vocals are beautiful and almost haunting in a way, similar to Taylor Momsen from The Pretty Reckless. This is a powerful opening track and sets the tone for the record as a whole.
Disease and Empty are full of heavy riffs and powerful drumming by Davide Piccolo, with Valentina’s vocals working perfectly throughout each track. Don’t You Know is a slightly mellower track, but works well in the mix of the album.
Dolomites launches back into those boot-scooting vibes and you can’t help but bop along as Valentina sings “I love this country”. Although this track changes things up completely, it works perfectly and is a definite standout.
Penultimate track Black Star’s Night returns to the riff heavy, head-banging sounds that would work incredibly well live. Before you know it, the album nears the end with lead single and title track Psycho. You’ll be left screaming for more. The Kreoles may be obscure now, but they’ll be worth keeping an eye on as their star begins to rise.
