So…this band is a bunch of redheads called Bloodnut, huh? That managed to put an idiotic grin on even this cynical bastard’s face, and the fact that their album, Blues from the Red Sons, is decent if unspectacular was just gravy. These blokes are red-headed and they let you know it with the fervor of an atheist vegan at a CrossFit convention. It’s all in good fun, though, and besides, rangas are going extinct. Well, that’s what fourth track, The Amber Reign Remains contends, anyway, so they’d probably be best off if they stuck together. Safety in numbers and all that.
The mix is an absolute mess and the vocals sound like a bear waking up from hibernation but hey, it’s sludge and that’s half the charm. Meanwhile, the songs suffer from a little similarity to their neighbour but, again, that’s sludge and the other half of the charm. The real problem with Bloodnut, and indeed all sludge bands is that, no matter what they do, High on Fire, Red Fang and Baroness have done it already, and better too, but damned if I didn’t sit there listening to this stupid album and, much to my wife’s displeasure, get the inexplicable desire to start a hoedown in the lounge room. It’s bewildering fun and you can’t help but root for them in all their melanin-deficient endeavours.
