Perth trio Opia don’t hold back, starting with album opener One By One. It’s a cracker of a track and the perfect intro, with the drum build up by Dain Pattison. Somethings, is a highlight for me, with Dan Zarb keeping a tight bass line which drives the groove. The song is catchy like a lot are here and the song ends on a heavy note. At times showing prog influences sharing similarities with the recently reformed Cog, and then evolving using electronics a lot like bands such as Karnivool. The catchy Signs, creates an atmosphere with an electronic soundscape which would be interesting to see on stage.
Title track Eon, proves Michael Bok has a soothing voice that fits so well into the music, with his nifty guitar work working hand in hand. Days, is another catchy tune but its next track Still Standing, that stands up to be one of the best songs on the album. One thing is for sure, there is a lot going on in each of these 10 songs and you would be a fool not to listen over and over them and find something new each time.
If you think the album will start winding down, it won’t. My favourite tracks are on the home stretch; Did You Notice, One Minute Ago, the hard rocking Come Undone, and album closer Commonality. The album is sure to grow on you after each listen, this trio are destined for big things, crank it loud and support our home grown talent.
