Each week, HEAVY will run a fresh list of 15 things to do with metal. They could be anything from metal karaoke songs to bands that have been banned from playing to horror-themed metal bands. You name it, if there are 15 or more of them out there, then HEAVY will assemble them into a list for you! This week’s list is Mosh Pit Madness. What’s more, at the bottom of each weekly list, we will tell you the subject of next week’s list and how you can use it to win yourself a signed CD from Better Noise Music artists.
While metal rules hands down, there’s nothing better than watching a band live and finding yourself unable to resist the urge to cut loose. These are called Mosh Pit tunes, and they invariably whip the crowd – particularly those in the pit – into a frenzy. The HEAVY 15 List Of Mosh Pit Tracks is as follows:
SCUM WILL RISE – NAILS
Whether you class them as grindcore, powerviolence metal, crust punk or hardcore punk, one thing is certain, and that is the fact that NAILS are brutal! Nothing exemplifies this more than their 2020 banger Scum Will Rise.
I AM KING – CODE ORANGE
Taken from the 2014 album of the same name – commonly viewed as one of the heaviest albums of the year – Code Orange created a barnstorming mosh pit anthem with I Am King. A definite mosh pit destruction track, especially the massive breakdown around the two-minute mark.
PULL HARDER ON THE STRINGS OF YOUR MARTYR – TRIVIUM
This track is the second single taken from Trivium‘s 2005 album Ascendancy. It was also performed live at Roadrunner Records’ Roadrunner United concert that year with Robb Flynn on vocals.
ROOTS BLOODY ROOTS – SEPULTURA
Roots Bloody Roots is a song by Sepultura, released as the lead single from their sixth studio album Roots in 1986. It is the band’s best known song and remains a concert staple, usually being performed on encores.
COWBOYS FROM HELL – PANTERA
Cowboys from Hell first appeared on Pantera‘s 1989 demo album, later being recycled for their major label album debut of the same name. Initially recorded for the band’s 1989 demo album, Cowboys from Hell: The Demos.
INTO THE PIT – TESTAMENT
Into The Pit was taken from Testament‘s 1988 album New World Order and quickly became a staple song in their live set. It is one of those songs you know exactly what it is from the opening guitar riff and just gets more intense from there.
FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE – METALLICA
Fight Fire With Fire is taken from Metallica‘s 1984 album Ride The Lightning. It was first performed live on October 31, 1983 and has been just one of Metallica’s early songs guaranteed to open the pit wide.
PEOPLE = SHIT – SLIPKNOT
Taken from Slipknot‘s 2001 masterpiece Iowa, People = Shit quickly became an unofficial anthem for Maggots everywhere. Led by deep toms before Corey Taylor growls over the top, this track is frenetic, full on and brilliant.
B.Y.O.B – SYSTEM OF A DOWN
BYOB (Bring Your Own Bombs) is a track from System Of A Down‘s fourth album, Mesmerize. While the song itself is a worthy mosh pit addition, it’s when that breakdown comes in that things get even nastier in the pit.
RAINING BLOOD – SLAYER
Raining Blood is a song by Slayer from their 1986 studio album Reign in Blood. The song’s religious concept is about overthrowing Heaven. The first 33 seconds of the song sets the tone with rain sound effects before exploding in a pit of rage.
KILLING IN THE NAME OF – RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE
Killing In The Name Of is another ball of angst from Rage Against The Machine, taken from their debut self-titled album. It was the lead single and is still the go-to RATM song over 30 years later.
BLACK LABEL – LAMB OF GOD
Black Label is the opening song on Lamb Of God‘s 2000 album New American Gospel. 20 years later, Metal Hammer listed the album in its Top 20 Metal Albums of 2000. Ferocious from start to finish, Black Label names itself in any Mosh Pit List of songs.
THRASHARD – DIRTY ROTTEN IMBECILES
Taken from their album Thrash Zone, D.R.I delivers a song about the insanity of the mosh pit. A song about the pit, for the pit, Thrashard is pure mosh pit bliss.
CAUGHT IN A MOSH – ANTHRAX
Caught In A Mosh is the standout track from Anthrax‘s 1987 album, Among the Living. If ever there was a song that conveys the actual feeling of being in the pit, this is it. Loosely based, this track has Anthrax relating getting caught in a mosh pit to dealing with stubborn, annoying people.
BLIND – KORN
Blind was released as the first single from Korn‘s self-titled album in August 1994. Opening with subtle high hat strikes, it’s the stuttering guitar play to begin that sets the tone before Jonathan Davis barks “are you ready”, signalling a descent into chaos for mosh pits everywhere.
